In the wonderful Piazza del Campidoglio, redesigned by Michelangelo on the hill that has always been the heart of the civil power of Rome, there are the buildings that house the vast and valuable collection of the Capitoline Museums. It was opened to the public by Pope Clement XII in 1734, but actually the museum was born three centuries before, when Pope Sixtus IV, in 1471, chose to donate his collection of bronze statues to the city (including the famous Capitoline Wolf). For this reason it is considered the first museum in the world, created to show people the works of Roman antiquity, found and collected over the centuries by nobles, bishops and popes of the capital, as well as the extraordinary paintings from the Pinacoteca Capitolina (masterpieces by Caravaggio, Guido Reni , Carracci, Guercino, Domenichino, Pietro da Cortona, Rubens, etc.). It offers a complete route from the enclosed courtyard of the Palace of the Conservatives, which houses the remains of a colossal acrolith representing Constantine, then climb to the first floor and admire some of the masterpieces on display here: the Capitoline Brutus, the Spinario, the wolf symbol of the city, the magnificent collection of Etruscan halls, the Castellani. On the second floor of the Palace of the Conservatives is the Pinacoteca. Also the halls of the building are real works of art with frescoes and statues from the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. Going down to the ground floor to visit the exedra with the equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius and admire the ruins of the ancient temples still visible in the structure of the building. From the lapidary galleries there is an underground tunnel that crosses the Tabularium with wonderful views of the Roman forum, to re-emerge in the New Palace, which houses the Egyptian collection, the famous statue of Marforio, the Dying Gaul, the lounges with the busts of philosophers and emperors and many other wonders of ancient art.
